Vital Documents Guide

Birth Certificate

Your birth certificate is the foundation document required for all other IDs. Here's how to get it:

  • Contact the Office of Vital Statistics in your birth state
  • Provide: Full name at birth, date/place of birth, parents' names
  • Cost: $10-30 depending on state (fee waivers available)
  • Processing: 7-10 days online, 3-4 weeks by mail
  • Without ID: Prison release papers or notarized statement accepted

Social Security Card

Essential for employment and benefits. The SSA has special programs for returning citizens:

  • Prerelease programs available in many facilities (90-180 days before release)
  • Post-release: Visit local SSA office with birth certificate and release papers
  • Call 1-800-772-1213 for nearest office location
  • Processing: 10-14 business days, completely free
  • SSA staff are trained to assist returning citizens

State ID / Driver's License

Required for employment, housing, and daily transactions:

  • Visit local DMV with birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of address
  • Proof of address: Letter from halfway house, shelter, or family member
  • Cost: $5-40 depending on state (fee waivers available)
  • Request REAL ID-compliant version for air travel and federal buildings

Building Business Credit Without Personal Credit

NEW

Access $50,000-$300,000+ in business capital regardless of your personal credit history. Business credit is completely separate from personal credit—your past doesn't define your business future.

The Foundation (Week 1-4)

  • Form an LLC: File with your state ($50-$500). Creates legal separation between you and your business.
  • Get an EIN: Free from IRS.gov. Your business's "Social Security number."
  • DUNS Number: Free from Dun & Bradstreet. Establishes your business credit file.
  • Business Bank Account: Separate finances, build credibility ($25-$100 initial deposit).

Build Credit Profile (Month 2-3)

  • Vendor Credit (Tradelines): Net 30 accounts with Uline, Quill, Grainger. No personal guarantee required.
  • Business Credit Card: Brex, Ramp, or Divvy. Based on business financials, not personal credit.
  • Pay On Time: Every payment builds your business credit score. Set up autopay.

Access Capital (Month 6+)

  • SBA Microloans: Up to $50,000 with favorable terms. Find lenders at SBA.gov.
  • Fintech Lenders: Fundbox, BlueVine, OnDeck. $50K-$300K based on revenue, not personal credit.
  • Multiple LLC Strategy: Form 2-3 LLCs. Each can access $50K-$150K independently.

💡 Key Insight

Business credit scores appear on different bureaus than personal credit (Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, Equifax Business). Lenders evaluate your business's payment history, not your personal credit score or criminal record.

Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs)

Free one-on-one business counseling available in every state. Over 1,000 locations nationwide.

  • Business plan development and review
  • Financial projections and cash flow analysis
  • Marketing strategy and customer acquisition
  • Access to capital and loan packaging
